The Solihull Approach online course for parents and the face-to-face course 'Understanding your child's behaviour' were the first courses to receive the new Department for Education CANparent Quality Mark for parenting courses at the launch of the Quality Mark in the House of Commons.

The Minister for Children and Families, Edward Timpson, presented the award to Hazel Douglas with Mary Rheeston and Karen Bateson from the Solihull Approach Team.

Understanding your child's behaviour

The Understanding Your Child's Behaviour group has been developed by the Solihull Approach team and is based on the Solihull Approach Model of Containment, Reciprocity and Behaviour Management. It is intended for parents and carers who want to know more about sensitive and effective parenting.

The framework of the Solihull Approach model and way of working is embedded in every aspect of this parenting group. The group focuses on the parent/child relationship aiming to improve parental sensitivity and responsiveness within the relationship.

The group emphasises the need for emotional containment and the presence of a reciprocal relationship. This enables parents to think, within the group and at home, about sensitive and effective approaches to behaviour management. It also empowers parents, to build on their existing skills and develop a way of thinking to solve difficulties in the future.

Understanding Your Child's Behaviour is designed to help parents develop a way of relating to their child that promotes child development and effective behaviour management. The facilitators help parents to think about what is being communicated through the child's behaviour and their relationship with the child. To support this approach the group programme does not start with behaviour management techniques, but rather sets them within the context of learning about the parent/child relationship.

The programme is designed to run for 2 hours per week over 10 weeks, with some flexibility, and is facilitated by professionals who have previously received the Solihull Approach Foundation Training and attended the Understanding Your Child's Behaviour Facilitators Training.

Aims of Group:

  • To promote understanding of children's behaviour within context of developmental issues
  • To promote child/ parents reciprocity
  • To increase confidence and self-esteem in parent and child
  • To giving parents a strategy for repair when things go wrong
  • To develop a framework for thinking about parent/child relationships, which can be developed into a life long skill
  • To promote reflective, sensitive and effective parenting

    Session 8 - Self-regulation and anger
    Session 9 - Communication and attunement - how to recover when things go wrong

72 data sets completed. Results showed:

Reduction in parental anxiety
Reduction in child behaviour problems

Antenatal Parenting Group:
Understanding pregnancy, labour, birth and your baby

Our 5-week antenatal parenting group 'Understanding pregnancy, labour, birth and your baby' combines traditional antenatal advice together with preparing families to have a relationship with their baby.

The group is delivered over 5 weeks in 2-hour sessions:


    Session 1 - Helping you and your baby through pregnancy and birth

    Session 2 - Getting to know your baby in the womb

    Session 3 - You, your baby and the stages of labour

    Session 4
    - Helping you and your baby through labour and birth

    Session 5
    - Feeding your baby

To be able to facilitate the course, practitioners must have attended either the Combined Antenatal Foundation and Antenatal Parenting Group Facilitators' 2 Day training or the 2 Day Foundation training and then the one-day Antenatal Parenting Group Facilitators' training .
